After thorough discussions, the Council of the EBRS decided to create the Johannes Ariens Kappers Medal as the highest prize of our Society to be awarded to a scientist who has made outstanding scientific achievements and who has been instrumental in the development of our research discipline. The medal that was awarded to Johannes Ariens Kappers, the first President of the EPSG and the former director of the Netherlands Brain Institute, during the second colloquium of the EPSG in Giessen in 1981 was used as a model. The medal shows the profile of Professor Ariens Kappers on one side and his famous diagram of the sympathetic innervation of the mammalian pineal organ on the other side.
